If you aren’t able to edit your hosts file and this is how your school system administrator has blocked access to youtube, myspace, facebook and other sites. Watch as we disable local DNS services on the school computer and reboot. Enabling your to gain access to facebook by allowing your system to bing the name facebook.com or whatever blocked website is to the actual real server ip address of facbook.com etc.
In the video you will also see that the user is locked out of editing the hosts file on the computer so that removing the dummy entries and saving the file blank is not an option.
To better understand a hosts file it is basically a file located usually in on Microsoft Windows computer in C:WindowsSystem32driveretc or a Unix / Linux / Mac OS named ‘hosts’. The host file is usually queried before a dns request is sent out to get the ip address of a websites internet server .com etc. The file is usually only editable by the system administrator of the local computer.
Here are the steps in the video…
1.Click Start / Windows Icon in bottom left hand screen of your Microsoft Windows computer.
2.Click on Run or in the newer versions of Windows just type in the box services.msc … Either way you will want to run services.msc if you have an older version of windows enter this in the run dialog box window and press enter.
3.A window will come up named services.
4.Scroll down until you see Dns Client.
5.Dns Client is a service we need to stop this service.
6.Right click on Dns Client and select stop.
7.Let it stop the service and wait while it does.
8.Restart your internet browser window in this case Firefox is restarted.
9.In firefox go to facebook.com or whatever blocked site you where trying to visit earlier.
10.The system hosts file on your computer should no longer be able to prevent you from getting on blocked sites and your dns queries should now go through.
